This report describes the initiatives taken by the government of New Brunswick, Canada in response to 36 of the recommendations made in 1984 by Canadian ministers at all levels of government that focus on ways of addressing the problem of wife beating.
Abstract
New Brunswick has made significant changes in the departmental structure of the New Brunswick Public Service which have affected the implementation of the recommendations. Progress has been made in implementing 35 recommendations. New Brunswick's government will review the health and human science programs at the elementary schools and will provide psychologists and guidance personnel to support the recommended programs. Legislation is also being developed to address confidentiality of case records and other issues. Other initiatives relate to training for professionals, protocols for professionals, the development of employee awareness programs related to domestic violence, the use of crisis intervention teams consisting of police officers and social workers, and services for victims and witnesses.
