This report is one of a series in which the Secretary- General of the United Nations will analyze information on the impact of organized crime upon society at large.
Abstract
The nature and extent of organized crime is discussed in terms of the characteristics of organized criminal activities, the internationalization of the phenomenon, and specific fields of operation of organized crime, most notably illicit drug trafficking, arms trafficking, automobile theft, forgery, theft of art and archaeological objects, computer crime, credit card fraud, environmental crimes, involvement in prostitution, and money laundering. Organized crime impacts upon society through corruption, negative economic consequences on the national and international levels, and threats to democracy and human rights. 27 notes
