STUDY EVALUATES THE AFFECT OF METHODONE VERSUS DRUG-FREE TREATMENT ON CRIMINAL INVOLVEMENT.
Abstract
THE STUDY WAS BASED ON A RANDOM SAMPLE OF THE 776 CLIENTS WHO HAD REGISTERED WITH THE CENTRAL INTAKE UNIT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT LOS ANGELES DRUG TREATMENT PROGRAM OVER A PERIOD OF ONE YEAR. AFTER THREE MONTHS, THE STUDY FOUND THAT FOR THOSE CLIENTS WHOSE CORRECTIONAL STATUS CHANGED, THE CHANGE LED TO LESS INVOLVEMENT WITH THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. THE DECREASE IN CORRECTIONAL STATUS IN DRUG-FREE CLIENTS WAS MUCH MORE RAPID AND SHARPER THAN IN EITHER THE METHADONE OR METHADONE/DRUGFREE SAMPLE GROUPS. THE METHADONE/DRUG-FREE GROUP ALSO SHOWED A REDUCED NUMBER OF ARRESTS OVER TIME. CONVICTIONS IN THE METHADONE/DRUG-FREE GROUP, HOWEVER, WERE ALMOST TRIPLE THOSE OF THE METHADONE AND DRUG-FREE SAMPLES....BS
