THE PLATO (PRORAMMED LOGIC FOR AUTOMATIC TEACHING OPERATION) SYSTEM HAS BEEN INSTITUTED AT TWO ILLINOIS PRISONS - ALTHOUGH THE INITIAL EXPENSE IS HIGH, IT SHOULD BE ECONOMICIAL IN THE LONG RUN.
Abstract
THE SYSTEM, WHICH UTILIZES A KEYBOARD, VIEWING SCREEN AND A REMOTE COMPUTER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS, IS DESCRIBED. INMATES WITH PLATO INSTRUCTION TAKING THE GED (GENERAL EQUIVALENCY DEGREE) TESTS HAVE A SUCCESS RATE 21 PERCENT HIGHER THAN THOSE NOT WORKING WITH PLATO.
