The 1995 annual report of the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority (ICJA) covers the ICJA's authority and organization, special projects, the Federal and State Grants Unit, the Research and Analysis Unit, and the Information Systems Unit.
Abstract
The annual report highlights the ICJA's accomplishments during 1995 in the areas of research, technology, and grant administration. By producing research reports and comprehensive studies on important topics of current interest, the ICJA provided necessary and timely criminal justice information to many different audiences, including policymakers and practitioners. In the area of technology, the highly successful and popular ALERT (Area-Wide Law Enforcement Radio Terminal) System continued its expansion, serving more than 200 agencies at the end of 1995. The ICJA continued to play a significant role in fighting drug-related and violent crime through the Edward Byrne Memorial State and Local Law Enforcement Assistance Program. This program provided $18.4 million to Illinois in 1995 and also funded an innovative program called the Gang Violence Reduction Project. In addition, Federal funding allowed the ICJA to implement a plan designed to stop violence against women. Steps were taken to improve the criminal history record system in Illinois, and the improvements decreased the backlog of criminal history records and speeded up the receipt and dissemination of criminal history records. Members of the ICJA are listed, and the ICJA's organization is described and illustrated. Special projects initiated by the ICJA during 1995 are noted that concern juvenile justice and criminal aliens. Activities of the Federal and State Grants Unit, the Research and Analysis Unit, and the Information Systems Unit are detailed, and ICJA expenditures during 1995 are tabulated. Tables and figures
