This article describes the use and benefits of the identification technology called IBIS (Information Based Identification System).
Abstract
In 1999, a new identification technology called IBIS (Information Based Identification System) was tested in California under a federally supported pilot program, Squad Car ID. IBIS was developed by the Minnesota based company, Identix, Inc. IBIS allows officers to identify subjects at remote locations in real time. Today, the IBIS handheld device captures forensic-quality prints of individual’s two index fingers with an integrated digital optical scanner and can process multiple subjects simultaneously. Remote identification technologies save the officer time by positively identifying subjects in minutes, as well as saving the department time and money. In addition to California, Portland, OR, Hennepin County, MN, and a regional database consisting of South Dakota, North Dakota, and Minnesota have deployed the Indentix IBIS.
