THE TUCSON POLICE DEPARTMENT (ARIZONA) INVOLVEMENT IN GEOGRAPHIC BASE FILE (GBF) TEST SITE PROJECT IS OUTLINED IN A DISCUSSION OF TUCSON'S HISTORY OF ELECTRONIC DATA PROCESSING.
Abstract
THE TESTING PROJECT WAS SPONSORED BY THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF CHIEFS OF POLICE (IACP). OVERALL DEMOGRAPHIC, POLICE DEPARTMENTAL STAFFING AND CALLS-FOR SERVICE, AND PART I CRIME DATA ARE LISTED FOR THE CITY OF TUCSON. THE HISTORY OF THE TUCSON POLICE DEPARTMENT'S EXPERIENCE WITH DATA PROCESSING IS TRACED, WITH ATTENTION TO THE PROCESSES IT HAS MAINTAINED, THE EQUIPMENT IT UTILIZES, THE DATA CAPTURED, AND ITS COMPUTERIZED REPORTS. THE DEPARTMENT'S EARLY INVOLVEMENT IN THE GEOGRAPHIC BASE FILE-DIME EFFORT IS NOTED. MENTION IS MADE OF TUCSON AGENCIES THAT FORMED A CONSORTIUM IN 1974 THAT WAS INTERESTED IN THE CREATION, MAINTENANCE, AND USE OF A GBF/DIME FILE. FINALLY, THE ENTRANCE OF TUCSON INTO THE IACP/GBF TEST SITE PROJECT IN 1976 IS DOCUMENTED WITH REMARKS ON ALL PHASES AND ASPECTS OF THE PROJECTS. COMMENTS ON THE SUCCESS OF THE PROJECT ARE ALSO PROVIDED. (MHP)
