This article discusses results from a survey of judges regarding high blood pressure.
Abstract
Four hundred six judges completed the survey; 114 had hypertension, 292 did not. Judges with high blood pressure averaged 9 hours a day in the courthouse, 5 of which were spent on the bench. Judges without hypertension worked only 8 hours a day in the courthouse. Eighty percent of judges without hypertension exercised regularly, 47 percent were overweight, 4 percent smoked, and 22 percent were female; comparable figures for the group with hypertension were 25 percent, 65 percent, 7 percent, and 14 percent, respectively. Most physicians interviewed did not believe that being a judge contributed to high blood pressure, although several said that job-related stress could be a contributing factor.
