DISCUSSION OF THE REHABILITATIVE EFFECTS OF PRISON EDUCATION AND THE ROLE OF HUMANITIES IN PRISON EDUCATION BASED ON THE RESULTS OF A THREE-YEAR FOLLOW-UP STUDY OF SELECTED INMATES.
Abstract
FOLLOW-UP DATA ON PARTICIPANTS IN AN EXPERIMENTAL EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM BASED ON THE HUMANITIES (HELD AT THE STATE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION AT CAMP HILL, PA) WAS GATHERED IN THREE YEARLY INTERVIEWS AFTER THE INMATES LEFT PRISON AND COMPARED WITH DATA ON INMATES WHO HAD PARTICIPATED IN REGULAR EDUCATION AND VOCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMS. STUDY FINDINGS REVEALED THAT ALTHOUGH THE HUMANITIES PROGRAM HAD SOME IMMEDIATE EFFECTS WHILE THE INMATES WERE STILL IN PRISON, THERE WAS NO CARRY-OVER AFTER THEY WERE RELEASED. THE AUTHOR MAINTAINS THAT THE HUMANITIES CAN NOT PLAY A ROLE IN INMATE REHABILITATION BECAUSE REHABILITATION, AS IT IS PRESENTLY CONCEIVED OF WITHIN A PRISON CONTEXT, IS A FALSE GOAL.
