This training manual on emotional responses to disaster is designed for use by mental health professionals in the training of emergency medical teams whose job is providing the immediate response to both large-scale and small-scale disasters.
Abstract
Members of these teams are usually not mental health professionals, but they must deal with a range of intense emotions in addition to a range of physical problems. The manual presents basis concepts in understanding disaster survivors, explains the phases of these behaviors, and outlines intervention strategies to use in addressing mental health problems following a disaster. The special problems of mentally ill individuals, drug addicts, and persons with antisocial behavior patterns and methods of coping with the stress experienced by disaster workers are also covered. The training is intended to cover a full day, with half the time spend in question and answer discussions. List of supplementary materials and 10 references.
