This article describes the planning and developing of an AIDS educational program for judges.
Abstract
It covers the components of the program, particularly medical information about AIDS, specific solutions to courtroom problems, potential legal issues and education of court personnel, professionals who appear in court, and the general public. It presents the California program as an example of an AIDS Education program which was incorporated into existing education programs of the Center for Judicial Education and Research. The format, speakers, and topics covered in the California program are described, and judicial issues and possible solutions are presented. Issues addressed include a juror with AIDS, prisoner with AIDS, custody/visitation issues, fears of HIV transmission high-risk behaviors, mandatory HIV testing of a criminal defendant, AIDS education of court and jail personnel, resource materials, and program evaluation.
