The University of Arizona Police Department recently worked with the personnel services employment manager to develop a recruiting plan that met its affirmative action goals and succeeding in producing the highest number of qualified applicants in the last 4 years.
Abstract
The department realized that it could not equal the pay offered by the city of Tucson, so it tried to become creative in attracting qualified people in the city and State. It developed a recruiting flyer that emphasized the tuition, overtime, and equipment benefits and other benefits of working at the university. It listed job openings in the newspapers and flyers for a 3-week period and received a large number of applicants, including female and minority candidates. The effort demonstrated that the best recruiting approach was to emphasize what the university could offer not only to the police officer, but also to the officer's family.
