BASED ON THE RESULTS OF A NATIONWIDE SURVEY OF EXISTING PUBLIC AWARENESS ACTIVITIES IN THE AREAS OF CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT, THIS PROCEDURE MANUAL PROVIDES SPECIFIC GUIDELINES ON HOW TO DEVELOP A PUBLIC AWARENESS PROGRAM.
Abstract
THE MANUAL IS INTENDED FOR BOTH PUBLIC AND PRIVATE AGENCIES WORKING IN THE FIELD OF CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT PREVENTION AND TREATMENT. IN CONTENT AND WRITING STYLE, IT IS DESIGNED TO ASSIST THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR CREATING PUBLIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE PROBLEM OF CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT, WHETHER THEY HAVE EXTENSIVE OR ONLY MINIMAL EXPERIENCE IN PUBLIC RELATIONS. AFTER BRIEFLY DESCRIBING THE VALUE OF A PUBLIC RELATIONS PROGRAM, THE BOOKLET OUTLINES METHODS OF PLANNING AND BUDGETING A PUBLIC RELATIONS PROGRAM. TECHNIQUES OF CARRYING OUT THE PROGRAM ARE THEN REVIEWED, INCLUDING SUGGESTIONS ON PUBLICITY, DEALING WITH THE MEDIA, PREPARING MATERIALS FOR THE MEDIA, SETTING UP A NEWS CONFERENCE, RADIO AND TELEVISION PUBLICITY, ADVERTISING, AND OBTAINING COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AND PARTICIPATION. ALSO INCLUDED ARE GUIDELINES ON PROGRAM EVALUATION AND A LIST OF RESOURCES SUCH AS TEXTS, AUDIO-VISUAL MATERIALS, ORGANIZATIONS, AND RADIO AND TELEVISION SPOTS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
