SURVEY RESEARCH CONDUCTED AMONG FRESHMEN AT A MAJOR SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY WHICH INDICATED A GENERALLY FAVORABLE ATTITUDE TOWARDS UNIONIZATION BY POLICEMEN.
Abstract
THE STUDY QUESTIONS WHETHER COLLEGE FRESHMEN PERCEIVE THE RIGHT OF PUBLIC EMPLOYEES TO UNIONIZE AND TO STRIKE TO BE AS LEGITIMATE AND BROAD AS THAT OF WORKERS IN PRIVATE ENTERPRISE, AND WHETHER THEY PERCEIVE THE RIGHT OF PUBLIC EMPLOYEES TO BARGAIN OR NEGOTIATE COLLECTIVELY TO INCLUDE THE RIGHT TO STRIKE AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT. THE AUTHOR INTERPRETS THE FINDINGS OF THE STUDY AS INDICATING A BROAD ACCEPTANCE OF UNIONIZATION AND STRIKE PRACTICES IN SUBSTANTIALLY EVERY PHASE OF PUBLIC EMPLOYMENT.
