ONE OF A SERIES OF EIGHT BOOKLETS ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE STANDARDS, THIS BOOKLET REVIEWS MAJOR ISSUES IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND SUGGESTS A STRATEGY FOR CITIZEN ACTION IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM IMPROVEMENT.
Abstract
THE FOUR MAJOR ISSUES EXAMINED IN THIS BROCHURE ARE POLICE EFFECTIVENESS/VICTIM WITNESS ASSISTANCE; PRETRIAL RELEASE/SPEEDY TRIAL; SENTENCING; AND INTER-AGENCY COOPERATION. EACH ISSUE IS APPROACHED FROM THREE PERSPECTIVES: THE NATURE OF THE PROBLEM, CURRENT AREAS OF CITIZEN ACTION, AND POSSIBLE AREAS OF CITIZEN ACTION. A SUGGESTED STRATEGY FOR COORDINATED CITIZEN ACTION IS PRESENTED WHICH INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING STEPS: LEARNING ABOUT THE LOCAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM; EXAMINING EXISTING PROGRAMS; DISCUSSING APPROPRIATE ACTION ALTERNATIVES; INITIATING ACTION ALTERNATIVES; AND EVALUATING ACCOMPLISHMENTS. FINALLY AN APPENDIX LISTS RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO CITIZENS ENGAGED IN EFFORTS TO IMPROVE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PRACTICES. FOR THE SERIES OF BOOKLETS, SEE NCJ-35647 THROUGH NCJ-35653, AND NCJ-35326.
