IMMEDIATE AND LONG RANGE PLANS FOR VANDAL-PROOFING SCHOOLS ARE OFFERRED, AND SPECIAL ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO DETECTION SYSTEMS.
Abstract
LOCKING WINDOWS AND DOORS, EXERCISING CLOSE CONTROL OF KEYS, TRIMMING TREES AND SHRUBS TO KEEP SCHOOLS VISIBLE FROM THE STREET, FENCES, OUTDOOR LIGHTS, LEAVING ON STRATEGIC INDOOR LIGHTS, APPEALS FOR HELP FROM STUDENTS AND THE COMMUNITY, URGING PERSONS LIVING NEAR THE SCHOOL TO CALL THE POLICE WHEN THEY OBSERVE SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY, AND ENCOURAGING ROUTINE POLICE PATROLS AROUND SCHOOLS ARE SOME OF THE SUGGESTIONS FOR IMMEDIATE PREVENTIVE MEASURES. SOME COMPONENTS RECOMMENDED FOR A BASIC PROTECTIVE SYSTEM ARE AS FOLLOWS: INSTALLATION OF STRONG DOORS AND WINDOWS, NIGHT WATCHMEN, REDEPLOYMENT OF THE CUSTODIAL STAFF, FREQUENT USE OF SCHOOL FACILITIES, ESTABLISHMENT OF A CHARGE-OF-QUARTERS PLAN, AND THE SUPPLYING OF ELECTRONIC DEVICES AND SYSTEMS THAT HAVE KEPT UP WITH THE INCREASING NEEDS OF SCHOOLS.
