Abstract
The authors examine the history of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco and the damage these substances inflict on mind and body. In addition, they review lifestyle changes, the fetal alcohol syndrome, drugs and sexuality, drugs and driving, drug laws, and drug overdoses. The emphasis of the book is on prevention to reduce the need for intervention, treatment and rehabilitation. Methods are described for preventing drug abuse through innovative programs, both those targeting individuals and those with community goals. Community resources for drug treatment are summarized that serve the interests of young people, parents, and health and welfare professionals. Principal categories of abused drugs are identified and main characteristics of each are outlined. Dangers to the fetus of drinking by the mother are delineated, and information designed to minimize devastating effects of the fetal alcohol syndrome on unborn children is provided.
