Abstract
The article provides basic information that would be of value to law enforcement administrators in developing a training program for officers on recognizing and handling an incident involving hazardous materials as the first responder. Minimum requirements for police hazardous materials training are suggested. Six methods for determining if an accident might involve a hazardous material are provided. General guidelines are included for reading truck side mounted placards and shipping papers. Illustrations of several common hazardous materials placards are provided as well as sketches of trucks and rail cars commonly used to transport hazardous materials. figures
