A DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITIES FOR CALENDAR YEAR 1978 IS PRESENTED IN THIS ANNUAL REPORT OF THE SELECT COMMITTEE ON NARCOTICS ABUSE AND CONTROL OF THE U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
Abstract
AFTER A FOREWORD AND STATEMENT OF JURISDICTION, AUTHORITY, AND POWERS, THE REPORT FOCUSES ON THE ACTIVITIES OF THE COMMITTEE DURING 1978. ALONG WITH SERVICES PROVIDED TO STANDING COMMITTEES AND MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE, THE COMMITTEE CONDUCTED A NUMBER OF INVESTIGATIONS INTO NARCOTIC ABUSE AND CONTROL. AMONG THESE WERE PRODUCTION; INVESTIGATION OF DEMAND REDUCTION; AND INQUIRIES INTO DRUG ABUSE IN THE MILITARY AND IN NEW YORK CITY SCHOOLS. STUDIES ALSO WERE CONDUCTED OF PSYCHOTROPIC DRUG ABUSE, THE ABUSE OF PCP AND TALWIN AND PYRIBENZAMINE, AND THE USE OF INTERNATIONAL CARGO FOR NARCOTICS SMUGGLING. DRUG TRAFFICKING IN SOUTH FLORIDA AND THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST WERE INVESTIGATED AS WELL AS THE MISUSE OF FEDERAL FUNDS IN DRUG TREATMENT PROGRAMS IN CALIFORNIA. OTHER ACTIVITIES OF THE COMMITTEE ARE DISCUSSED SUCH AS COMMITTEE TASK FORCES, LEGISLATIVE RECOMMENDATIONS, AND SPECIAL PROJECTS. COMMITTEE HEARINGS, PUBLICATIONS, AND NEWS RELEASES ARE DESCRIBED.
