This article examines Colorado's parole-specific academy that was established in its Department of Corrections.
Abstract
In 2008, the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) received full accreditation from the American Correctional Association (ACA). At the same time, the CDOC began using reentry concepts and evidence-based practices to more effectively work towards reducing recidivism among offenders. This article discusses the establishment of the Kathleen Recla Academy, a dedicated parole-specific academy aimed at training and developing new parole officers. This article looks closely at the courses of the academy. Course development takes into account department approved policies and practices, ACA standards, and State administrative regulations. The faculty at the academy is made up of volunteer instructors who are encouraged to use real-world examples and personal experience in the application of taught principles. Recent changes to the academy include online learning opportunities and the use of a cost-effective software system that makes officer registration and delivery and tracking of training more simple and efficient. Future challenges faced by the academy are discussed.
