This chapter profiles the mission and composition of the St. Vincent Child Protection Team at the St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio.
Abstract
The St. Vincent Medical Center Adult Protection Team is designated to respond to the problems that face victims of adult abuse, neglect, or exploitation. The team collaborates with the attending physician in evaluating the patient's physical condition, investigating any injury, and assessing the patient's strengths and deficiencies to determine what action the patient can take on his/her own behalf. The team provides a supportive environment in which the patient can make decisions, and it makes appropriate referrals to community resources. The team consists of a medical consultant (director of the team); a social worker (coordinator of the team); and representatives from each of the following disciplines: enterostomal therapy, legal services, nutrition services (clinical dietician), the visiting nurse service, the credit department, medical outpatient services, pastoral care (nun or chaplain), security, a nurse from the emergency/trauma department, a nurse from radiology, a nurse from the medical surgical unit, risk management, gerontological nursing, audiovisual services, the hospital pharmacy, and other social workers and registered nurses as needed. This chapter explains the roles of the various members of the team. Case studies are included to illustrate how the team operates. 11 photographic figures and appended elder abuse (neglect) reporting form and the form of the Adult Protection Team Report
