The security department of the University of Michigan Hospital has a computerized dispatch card system that gathers, stores, summarizes, and analyzes data on tasks performed by security personnel.
Abstract
It also provides reports so that appropriate training of security personnel can be instituted. Summary reports are available to all department personnel and provide information to assist in job performance improvement. The system consists of dispatch cards which provide individual reports of incidents and requests; computerized data bases, which store information from dispatch cards; and computer-generated analyses and reports. Management analysis of the dispatch card data is performed by using incidents codes. A major benefit of the system is that by listing locations, departments, and other data relevant to security, managers gain knowledge of the tasks performed by their personnel. Another benefit is officers' appreciation of the various tasks they perform, as they must write a brief on every incident. Security personnel submit completed dispatch cards to shift supervisors at the end of each shift. Cards are reviewed for accuracy by supervisors and, if correct, are sent to data entry to be recorded on floppy disks. Input is screened by a comprehensive automated edit before posting any record to the various data bases.
