AN ACCOUNT OF ATTEMPTS TO EMPLOY METAL DETECTORS IN LOCATING STOLEN EARTH-MOVING EQUIPMENT THOUGHT TO HAVE BEEN SECRETED IN TWO SAND QUARRIES.
Abstract
THREE MEMBERS OF THE POLICE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT BRANCH'S EQUIPMENT SECTION WERE CALLED IN TO CONDUCT THE SEARCH. THREE INSTRUMENTS WERE USED - A GOLDAK 'COMMANDER' MUTUAL INDUCTANCE METAL DETECTOR, A WARDLE AND DAVENPORT PROTON MAGNETOMETER, AND A PLESSEY FLUXGATE GRADIOMETER. ALTHOUGH FULL DIGGING WAS NEVER CARRIED OUT, THE USE OF THE ABOVE NAMED EQUIPMENT PROVED ENTIRELY SUCCESSFUL FROM A TECHNICAL VIEWPOINT OF ACCURACY IN DETECTING FERROUS OBJECTS.
