The Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Lexington houses most of the pregnant inmates under the jurisdictions of the Bureau of Prisons (BOP). In this particular unit, approximately 17 percent of the women are expectant mothers who form a cohesive support group.
Abstract
The extensive prebirth work performed by the unit staff includes prenatal counseling, appropriate work assignments, and support during delivery. When there is no available family, the staff help the mother find placements for the babies, sometimes actually transporting the babies to distant relatives. Local agencies in the Lexington area have been helpful by providing emergency placements, short-term foster care, and adoption services. FCI Lexington has hosted a conference to address the complicated issues of pregnant inmates. One Federal pilot parenting program, Parents and Children Together (PACT) has been implemented at FCI Lexington. The program, consisting of four parts, is designed to emphasize the importance of the family unit and the need to develop parenting and communications skills.
