QUESTIONS ARISING WHEN ESCAPED INMATES RECEIVING PSYCHIATRIC CARE APPLY FOR HELP FROM THEIR SOCIAL WORKER IN ORDER TO INFLUENCE THEIR TREATMENT SITUATION IN THE ASYLUM.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR ANALYSES THE QUESTION WHETHER THE SOCIAL WORKER CAN HONOR THE TRUST PUT IN HIM BY THE ESCAPEE. HE CONSIDERS THAT UNDER THE LAW ANY ASSISTANCE GIVEN TO AN ESCAPED PRISONER OR COMMITTED PATIENT IS PUNISHABLE, AND THAT THERE IS NO EXCEPTION FOR SOCIAL WORKERS. ON THE OTHER HAND, BY TURNING HIS CLIENT OVER TO THE POLICE A VALUABLE POSSIBILITY FOR REHABILITATION IS LOST AS WELL AS THE CREDIBILITY OF THE SOCIAL WORKER. A SOLUTION TO THE DILEMMA MAY BE FOUND BY ARRANGING A MEETING BETWEEN CLIENT AND SOCIAL WORKER AND A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE INSTITUTION FROM WHICH THE ESCAPE TOOK PLACE. --IN DUTCH
