This paper outlines the hazards posed to National Guard officers who participate in joint counterdrug operations that involve clandestine drug laboratories.
Abstract
State National Guards are encouraged to consult with local offices of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) before becoming involved in raids on clandestine drug labs; in addition, National Guard personnel should not be allowed to enter a laboratory unless they have completed a special training program approved by the DEA. Clandestine laboratories are particularly dangerous because of the chemicals used to manufacture illegal drugs and the potentially violent nature of the people who produce the drugs.
