'The Haven,' located in Whyalla, South Australia, is an alternative secondary school designed to help seriously maladjusted students modify their disruptive behaviors and develop the skills required to manage their lives constructively.
Abstract
Students enrolled in the program have a well-documented history of chronic, serious disruptiveness in school, a recent history of violence in school, poor school attendance, repeated law-breaking, drug abuse, and academic underachievement. The curriculum is flexible and responsive to changing needs but focuses on the development of skills necessary for literacy and numeracy, domestic management, and money and stress management. The curriculum also addresses the management of emotions, sexuality, problemsolving, and values and beliefs. Teaching methods are adapted to students' personal needs and potential. The aim of the program is to prepare the students for return to the regular school. Students are enabled to achieve reachable goals sufficiently high to challenge them. They also learn to follow rational rules and accept the consequences of misbehavior.
