THIS EVALUATION OF HIGH PRESSURE SODIUM VAPOR STREET LIGHTING WAS BASED ON SURVEYS OF BUSINESS ESTABLISHMENTS, RESIDENTS, AND FOOT PATROL OFFICERS, AND ON CRIME DATA.
Abstract
THE DATA ANALYSIS SHOWED THAT RESIDENTS OF THE EXPERIMENTAL AREA FEEL SAFER WITH THE NEW LIGHTS. BOTH RESIDENTS AND BUSINESS OWNERS PREFER THE LIGHTS OVER THE OLD LIGHTS. FOOT PATROL OFFICERS FEEL MORE SAFE UNDER THE LIGHTS AND BELIEVE THEY ARE HELPFUL IN PERFORMING POLICE OPERATIONS. BUSINESS FEEL THEIR SHOPS ARE SAFER AT NIGHT, ALSO. HOWEVER, THE EFFECT OF THE LIGHTING ON THE CRIMES OF AUTO THEFT, ASSAULTS, BURGLARIES, AND ROBBERIES HAS NOT ACHIEVED THE CRIME REDUCTION OBJECTIVES THAT WERE ANTICIPATED....PLO
