This compendium of materials provides background information and guidelines and policies relating to the handling of pretrial detainees who have acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) or who are handicapped mentally or physically.
Abstract
The materials include a document prepared by the Administrative Office of the Courts of Miami regarding legal issues as well as the guidelines established by the San Francisco Sheriff's Department regarding the handling of detainees suspected of having AIDS. Additional materials include a paper prepared by the National Sheriffs' Association regarding the responses of court officials to arrestees or inmates brought before the court who are suspected of or diagnosed with AIDS, including those who are symptomatic, violent, or assaultive. Further materials include guidelines from the New York Office of Court Administration regarding the handling of court proceedings involving people afflicted with AIDS and articles regarding New York and Los Angeles court guidelines and policies. Other materials focus on concerns and policy responses related to law enforcement officers; AIDS in prisons and jails; and the handling of mentally and physically handicapped pretrial detainees in the District of Columbia, Hennepin County (Minn.), Montgomery County (Ohio), and Galveston County (Tex.)
