ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF A COLORLESS, ODORLESS, ELECTRICALLY NON-CONDUCTIVE, HIGH-DENSITY GAS STORED IN LIQUID FORM FOR USE IN COMPUTER FACILITIES.
Abstract
HALON 1301, A NEW EXTINGUISHING AGENT, HAS THE ADVANTAGES OVER OTHER SYSTEMS SUCH AS DRY CHEMICAL SYSTEMS, OF HIGH PENETRATION, UNIFORM DISPERSION, LACK OF RESIDUE, NON-CONDUCTIVITY, NON-REACTION WITH MOST MATERIALS, AND NO DETERIORATION. IT IS THE SAFEST GASEOUS AGENT AVAILABLE, LEAVES A SAFE OXYGEN LEVEL, PERMITS EXPOSURE TO A 20-PER CENT CONCENTRATION FOR A 2-HOUR PERIOD WITHOUT INJURY, AND IS EFFECTIVE WITH BOTH SURFACE AND DEEP-SEATED FIRES. DISADVANTAGES INCLUDE THE RELATIVELY HIGH COST, THE LIMITED AMOUNT OF AGENT AVAILABLE, THE PROBLEM OF DANGEROUS BY-PRODUCTS IF THE VAPOR DECOMPOSES, AND THE GREAT EXPERTISE AND PLANNING REQUIRED FOR INSTALLATION. DETECTION SYSTEMS ARE ALSO DISCUSSED.
