This manual provides guidelines for a variety of treatment programs for juveniles who have abused alcohol and other drugs (AOD).
Abstract
Following an introductory chapter, a chapter on a comprehensive continuum of adolescent treatment options describes levels and types of AOD abuse treatment settings and intensities, including outpatient treatment and inpatient treatment options/residential care. The next chapter focuses on outpatient treatment for adolescents, as it reviews the types of outpatient services, treatment components, and various program and staff issues. A chapter on inpatient treatment similarly reviews inpatient adolescent AOD abuse treatment. The fifth chapter provides an overview of the juvenile justice system, the relationship between this system and AOD abuse treatment, and recommendations for programming and treatment improvement. Legal and ethical issues in the treatment of drug-abusing adolescents are addressed in the sixth chapter. It describes the legal and ethical issues that relate to diagnosis and treatment of the incarcerated adolescent, as well as the impact of the correctional system on medical treatment. The concluding chapter, which discusses cost models for adolescent treatment programs, describes three sample treatment programs: combined intensive and nonintensive outpatient treatment, intermediate residential treatment, and treatment in a psychosocial therapeutic community. 4 exhibits and appended information on adolescent development and specific drugs of abuse
