These guidelines are designed to help school personnel and others plan, implement, and evaluate education efforts to prevent morbidity and mortality associated with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and other HIV (human immunodeficiency virus)-related illnesses.
Abstract
The guidelines incorporate principles for AIDS education developed by the President's Domestic Policy Council and approved by the President in 1987. The principle purpose of AIDS education is to prevent HIV infection. The content of AIDS education should be developed with the involvement of parents and should address the broad range of behavior exhibited by young people. Education should encourage students to abstain from premarital sexual intercourse and the use or injection of illicit drugs. It should also provide guidance in reducing the risk of infection for those young people who are sexually active and use drugs. AIDS education should be taught by existing school teachers after training in the curriculum. The article provides guidelines for the content of AIDS education in elementary, middle, and junior/senior high school. Criteria are provided for program assessment, and suggestions are offered for curriculum time and resources. Appendixes present the AIDS education principles of the President's Domestic policy Council and discuss the extent of AIDS and indicators of adolescent risk. 26 references.
