This brochure is designed to help adolescents help a friend who has a problem with alcohol or other drugs.
Abstract
The brochure emphasizes the need to understand what is going on with the friend before intervening, to recognize that people with drug problems must admit that they have a problem and make an effort to obtain help, and to encourage and guide their friend to seek this help. Individual sections explain the signs of a problem with alcohol or other drugs, the potential consequences of a drinking or drug problem, the reasons for serious drinking or drug problems, and the reasons people find it difficult to seek help for themselves. Suggested actions for the reader are to approach the friend in trouble with another mutual friend and to discuss the issue privately with someone else who is knowledgeable and reassuring. They should speak directly only when the friend is not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, speak in a caring and understanding tone of voice, be prepared for denial and anger, and find out where help is available.
