This guide presents an overview of policies and guidelines for women and children living in a shelter.
Abstract
A shelter is a safe place for women and children away from the violence. Advocates are housed in the shelter to provide support in dealing with medical, legal, housing, social services, mental health, and the criminal justice system. This guidebook helps familiarize women with the shelter, the expectations of the shelter, and offers suggestions that might be helpful while staying in the shelter. Some of the policies and guidelines addressed in this book include: confidentiality, meeting the needs of children, the disciplining of children, communication and gossip, support group, spirituality, security, telephone usage, play area, visitors, house meetings, activities outside the shelter, living room, sleeping space, cooking and kitchen, bathroom and laundry, grievance procedure, and checking out.
