This document presents a curriculum for a school-based alcohol and drug life skills program.
Abstract
The curriculum is designed to support elementary school children by giving them information on drugs, alcohol, and alcoholism; providing an opportunity to share and express their feelings related to alcohol abuse; helping them develop communication and coping skills; teaching refusal skills; demonstrating problemsolving skills; and emphasizing their potential for personal growth. The curriculum includes a staff presentation and a presentation to parents. Activity sessions for students in the third, fourth, and fifth grades focus on alcohol awareness, stress, coping skills, peer pressure, refusal skills, and decisionmaking. The curriculum also outlines counseling group activity sessions, and lesson plans for those sessions, targeted at children of alcoholics.
