This is a collection of current research by noted scholars on Chinese child development.
Abstract
The book re-examines long-held beliefs and preconceptions about Chinese culture; takes issue with simple demarcations of East and West; draws forth incompatible pictures and contradictory facts about Chinese children; points to neglected areas of research; and draws attention to new problems of the modern Chinese family. The first three chapters highlight the importance of culture on child development. Four chapters review the literature on the cognitive development of Chinese children. Two chapters are concerned with the mental health and psychopathology of Chinese children, and one chapter discusses delinquency. Two chapters focus on Chinese who live in Western countries and the adjustment of adolescents and intergenerational conflict in Chinese families. One chapter relates to the paramount one-child policy in Mainland China and its effects and implications. Notes, tables, figures, references, index
