Written for professionals who provide or intend to provide group treatment for adolescent females who have been sexually abused by their fathers or father substitutes, this volume discusses sexual abuse, its impacts on victims and families, treatment issues, and treatment techniques.
The material is intended for use with groups offered either in community-based agencies or as a component of inpatient services. It is intended for use with a nonpsychotic, intellectually unimpaired client population and was written for the full range of professionals in the field of sexual abuse treatment. The discussion notes that group treatment is most effective when offered in conjunction with individual, dyadic, and/or family treatment. However, when resources are limited and group treatment is the only available approach, the type and focus of interventions must be carefully considered to ensure beneficial outcomes. Individual chapters present the results of a survey of experienced group treatment providers in Canada and the United States, a discussion of family dynamics and treatment issues, and an analysis of the impact of sexual abuse on adolescent victims. Other chapters discuss the planning and structure of group sessions and present a variety of group interventions used to address abuse-related issues.
