MATTERS CONSIDERED IN SEEKING A FUNDING GRANT ARE IDENTIFIED AND DISCUSSED, AND THE STEPS INVOLVED IN WRITING A PROPOSAL ARE PRESENTED.
Abstract
ADMINISTRATORS AND PLANNERS IN THE HUMAN SERVICES ARE QUOTED EXTENSIVELY IN THE DISCUSSIONS OF PROPOSAL WRITING AS RATIONAL PLANNING, THE POLITICS OF GRANTSMANSHIP, TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE, REVIEWING PROPOSALS, AND PROPOSALS AS PRIORITY SETTING. THE PRIORITIES OF THE AGENCY SEEKING FUNDING, GRANTSMANSHIP WITHIN THE AGENCY'S OVERALL FUNDING STRATEGY, THE FUNDING ENVIRONMENT, INFORMATION SOURCES, AND CERTAIN RULES OF THE GRANTSMANSHIP GAME ARE CONSIDERED IN A GENERAL DISCUSSION OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF A GRANTSMANSHIP STRATEGY. FACTORS IN THE ENVIRONMENT WHICH SHOULD BE UNDERSTOOD TO IMPLEMENT THE STRATEGY ARE ALSO IDENTIFIED AND EXAMINED. ONE CHAPTER FOCUSES ON THE KINDS OF INFORMATION NEEDED TO BE EFFECTIVE IN WRITING A PROPOSAL OR FINDING AN ORGANIZATION INTERESTED IN FUNDING IT. THE FOLLOWING 8 STEPS IN PREPARING TO WRITE A PROPOSAL ARE DISCUSSED: (1) CONTACTING THE FUNDER, (2) IDENTIFYING NEEDS, (3) FORMULATING OBJECTIVES, (4) SELECTING THE METHOD OF INTERVENTION, (5) REVIEWING OTHERS' EXPERIENCES, (6) MAKING LOCAL CONTACTS, (7) PLANNING PROCEDURES, AND (8) SURVEYING RESOURCES. A GENERAL APPROACH TO WRITING A PROPOSAL IS CONSIDERED IN THE FINAL CHAPTER. APPENDIXES PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING: A SUGGESTED 'HOW-TO-DO-IT' LIBRARY, PROGRAMS AND GRANTS INFORMATION, GRANTSMANSHIP GAMES, SOURCES OF INFORMATION ON HUMAN SERVICE PROGRAMS AND NEEDS, A SAMPLE OF A PROPOSAL NARRATIVE, A SAMPLE OF A PLAN FOR A MODULAR LEARNING UNIT ON INTERAGENCY LINKAGE BUILDING, AN INVENTORY OF POSSIBLE TOPICS FOR ACTION ON HOW-TO-DO-IT GUIDES, AND A PARTIAL LISTING OF RECENT PROJECTS CONDUCTED BY THE CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAM.
