CASE STUDY OF ADMINISTRATIVE AND SOCIAL CHANGE IN OAHU PRISON, HAWAII'S MAXIMUM SECURITY INSTITUTION.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR OUTLINES A SERIES OF THEORETICAL PROPOSITIONS ON THE RELATIONSHIPS ASSOCIATED WITH ORDER AND STABILITY IN SOCIAL SYSTEMS. HE RELATES THEM TO THE EVENTS WHICH OCCURRED WHEN A NEW WARDEN ASSUMED CONTROL OF THE PRISON IN 1946 AND ATTEMPTED TO CHANGE TRADITIONAL INSTITUTIONAL PRACTICES. IT WAS FOUND THAT BOTH ELEMENTS IN THE GUARD FORCE AND OLDER INMATE LEADERS RESISTED THE OPEN COMMUNICATION PATTERNS OF THE NEW ADMINISTRATION.
