Abstract
THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES THE 'POLITICAL INFIGHTING' THAT BEGAN WHEN ADLAI STEVENSON DIED IN LONDON, MAKING IT POSSIBLE TO MOVE ARTHUR OUT OF THE COURT INTO THE UNITED NATIONS AMBASSADORSHIP TO MAKE ROOM ON THE COURT BENCH FOR FORTAS. HE TAKES US THROUGH THE BATTLES OVER THE HAXOSWORTH AND CARSWELL NOMINATIONS, THE UNSUCCESSFUL ATTEMPT TO IMPEACH JUSTICE DOUGLAS, AND THE DEVELOPING BATTLE THAT PRESIDENT NIXON FACED OVER HIS SUBSEQUENT NOMINATIONS, NOT ONLY WITH CONGRESSIONAL LIBERALS BUT WITH THE LEGAL PROFESSION ITSELF. THE AUTHOR ALSO ANALYZES THE ROLE OF THE SUPREME COURT IN THE COURSE OF THE NATION'S HISTORY AND THE 'DANGERS OF CREATING A COURT APT TO RESIST MINORITY ASPIRATIONS WITH MAJORITARIAN REPRESSION'.
