This CD-ROM illustrates the usefulness of GIS technology to Homeland Security efforts.
Abstract
According to the information contained on this CD-ROM, effective Homeland Security is related to understanding geography and the ability to quickly and accurately share information. The recent terrorist attacks on United States’ soil has changed the way our Nation addresses security for United States citizens. The goal of this CD-ROM is to demonstrate the usefulness of GIS technology to Homeland Security efforts. The information contained here illustrates how GIS software can facilitate the collection, analysis, and sharing of spatial data relating to security concerns. GIS software can help managers collect, create, and inventory spatial data and maps, as well as disseminate pertinent information relating to geographic knowledge. The CD-ROM explains that this type of GIS information can be used for surveillance and detection, prevention, risk assessment, mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery efforts. Training scenarios and contingency plans can also be created with GIS software. Among the benefits of GIS technology is that field data can be managed in real time, facilitating prompt responses to national security threats. The information contained on this CD-ROM includes an overview of the role of GIS technology for addressing issues of Homeland Security; video interviews with GIS authorities, Homeland Security experts, and GIS practitioners; Homeland Security demonstrations; GIS solutions including software and services available from ESRI and their business partners; a GIS resource kit that includes presentations, brochures, and chapters from ESRI press books; and contact information for the ESRI Homeland Security Team.
