SUPPORT IS URGED FOR THE VIEW THAT EXTENDING THE POLICE INTO SOCIAL WORK OF A NON POLICE NATURE PLACES THEM IN POSITIONS FOR WHICH THEY HAVE NO RESOURCES.
Abstract
EXAMPLES ARE GIVEN OF INCIDENTS IN WHICH POLICE IN THE GHETTO WERE NOT ABLE TO FILL IN FOR COMMUNITY OR GOVERNMENT AGENCIES CLOSED FOR THE WEEKEND. THESE SITUATIONS OFTEN FORCE THE POLICE INTO A CONFLICT ROLE WITH THE COMMUNITY.
