Rhode Island has enacted legislation that covers the identification and apprehension of criminals, the expungement of criminal records, and access to public records.
Abstract
Legislation has established a division of criminal identification to obtain fingerprints, photographs, and other information that will facilitate the criminal identification process. Police departments are required to furnish fingerprints and stolen property lists and to make available photographs and descriptive information on persons charged and convicted. Legislation also contains provisions on destroying or sealing records of persons acquitted or otherwise exonerated, the expungement of criminal records, the public's right of access to criminal records, and the individual's right of privacy.
