This book discusses gender as a significant factor in elder abuse.
Abstract
The book claims that the structural inequalities inherent in the sociocultural and economic differences between women and men have a direct influence on questions of elder abuse. In asserting the importance of gender in the context of elder abuse, the book adopts a materialist feminist stance which operates from the premise that the gender ascribed to individuals will directly affect their lives. The book discusses: (1) the feminization of old age and its conditions; (2) gender issues in the history of the research on elder abuse; (3) ageism and sexism -- discrimination in/of old age; (4) gender issues in elder abuse in institutional settings; (5) a gendered view of care and elder abuse in domestic settings; and (6) future directions for work on gender issues in elder abuse. The book contains a sample elder abuse questionnaire. Tables, bibliography, appendix, index
