DURING FISCAL YEAR 1979, THE GARDINER HOWLAND SHAW FOUNDATION AWARDED 26 GRANTS TOTALING $145,801 TO CONTINUED SUPPORT OF PAST GRANTEES, SUPPORT OF NEW PROGRAMS, AND SUPPORT OF SPECIFIC FOCUS PROJECTS.
Abstract
THE PRIVATE FOUNDATION WAS ESTABLISHED FOR THE STUDY, PREVENTION, CORRECTION AND ALLEVIATION OF CRIME AND DELINQUENCY AND THE REHABILITATION OF THE ADULT AND JUVENILE OFFENDER. IN 1979, IN THE CATEGORY OF CONTINUED SUPPORT FOR PAST GRANTEES, GRANTS RANGED FROM SUPPORT OF THE SELF DEVELOPMENT GROUP, A MULTISERVICE COMMUNITY PROGRAM FOR ADULT EX-OFFENDERS, TO SUPPORT OF THE PENIKESE ISLAND SCHOOL (MASSACHUSETTS), A RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT PROGRAM FOR JUVENILE OFFENDERS COMMITTED TO THE DEPARTMENT OF YOUTH SERVICES. UNDER NEW AND INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS, GRANTS RANAGED FROM SUPPORT OF EMERGE, A NEW ORGANIZATION PROVIDING COUNSELING SERVICES TO MEN INVOLVED IN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, TO SUPPORT OF AN ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION AND JOB PLACEMENT PROGRAM FOR YOUNG WOMEN INVOLVED IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. AS FAR AS SPECIFIC FOCUS PROJECTS, THE FOUNDATION CONTINUED TO DEMONSTRATE ITS INTEREST IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND EXPANSION OF ALTERNATIVE COURT PROGRAMS THROUGH SUPPORT OF TWO DIVERSION PROGRAMS, TWO RESTITUTION PROGRAMS, AND FOUR MEDIATION PROGRAMS. ONE GRANT SUPPORTED THE DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF THE FIRST RESTITUTION PROGRAM IN THE STATE TO BE COLLABORATELY ESTABLISHED BY A STATE COLLEGE. THE FOUNDATION ALSO CONTINUED TO SPONSOR A TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE AGENCIES INCLUDING THE DISTRIBUTION OF A QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER AND A RESOURCE DIRECTORY, THE SPONSORSHIP OF A GRANTEE WORKSHOP, AND A SEMINAR ON THE FAMILIES OF TROUBLED YOUTH IN THE JUSTICE SYSTEM. A FINANCIAL BALANCE SHEET AND THE PROCEDURE FOR GRANT APPLICATION ARE INCLUDED. (MJW)
