Abstract
BLACK GANGS HAVE LONG EXISTED IN PHILADELPHIA, EVEN WHEN THEY HAD FADED AND THEN RESURGED AGAIN IN OTHER CITIES. DESCRIPTIONS ARE GIVEN OF THE VARIOUS TITLES THAT ARE GIVEN TO GANG MEMBERS. THE ROLE OF THE GANG IN THE LIFE OF BLACK ADOLESCENTS IS PORTRAYED. THE NEED FOR IDENTITY THAT THE GANG REPRESENTS COMES THROUGH IN SEVERAL INTERVIEWS WITH GANG AND EX-GANG MEMBERS.
