This handbook is designed to help teachers, counselors, and administrators to better serve immigrant students by having updated information on gangs.
Abstract
Types of gangs include social gangs, delinquent gangs, and violent gangs. Many are associated with specific ethnic groups, including Latinos, blacks, and Asians. Reasons for gang membership range from identity to protection, fellowship, and intimidation. The profile of gang members presented here focuses on family-related indicators, personal indicators, community-related indicators, and school-related indicators. Examples of gang activity include drive-by shootings, graffiti, robbery and aggravated assault, and drug use. The booklet includes recommendations for teachers in dealing with student gang affiliation.
