This manual is intended to inform parents about the identifying factors that are woven into the gang culture so that they may recognize indicators of their own child's potential involvement.
Abstract
The primary reasons a child joins a gang either as a fringe member, hard-core member, or leader include a perceived lack of parental recognition, desire for status, sense of fellowship, and peer pressure. This manual focuses on four predominant gangs, including the Disciplines, Vice Lords, Crips, and Bloods, describing their unique identifiers, hand signs, and graffiti. In addition, the manual outlines indicators that a child is involved in gang activity, a guide to street language, and lists of known Crips and Bloods groups in the Los Angeles area.
