This book is a study of the preadolescent boy and his recreational needs.
Abstract
The United States has devoted much money and attention to public and parochial school systems and to health care for children. However, the training of character is vastly more important in the life of a child, and the influence of recreation on character has been confirmed by experience. There are three movements which have profoundly modified concepts regarding the child, and the literature of recreational work has scarcely begun to assimilate the contributions of these movements: (1) the test movement; (2) development of social case work; and (3) the growth of clinical psychology. This study seeks to answer the question of how modern social and psychological methods can aid the recreational leader who deals with boys of the gang age. The book discusses such topics as the preadolescent's plan of life, the intelligence factor, sub-average minds, the influence of home, and the boy and the community. Extensive bibliography, index
