THE AUTHOR CRITICIZES THE PHILOSOPHY AND PRACTICE OF ENGLAND'S PRISON SYSTEM AND OFFERS SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVING ITS IMPACT ON CRIME.
Abstract
IMPRISONMENT IS SUGGESTED ONLY WHERE THERE IS NO AVAILABLE ALTERNATIVE, DUE EITHER TO THE NECESSITY TO PROTECT SOCIETY OR TO THE LACK OF ANY ALTERNATIVE SOURCE OF DETERRENCE. FEWER REMANDS IN CUSTODY, MORE ALTERNATIVES TO IMPRISONMENT, SHORTER PRISON SENTENCES, AND REFORMS IN THE PRISON SYSTEM ITSELF ARE SUGGESTED.
